Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) has launched, together with the promoter of renewable energy projects Harmony Energy, its first energy storage project through Tesla batteries in Holes Bay, United Kingdom.

The project is a reflection of FRV’s long-term investment plan to develop energy storage projects around the world.

The project uses six Tesla Megapack batteries that, through lithium ions, allow energy storage for large-scale installations. Megapack batteries have a capacity of 15 MWh and are connected to the Southern Electric Power distribution network.

The project provides the ability to store energy from renewable sources and gives the UK’s national grid system the flexibility to meet peak demand times and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The battery system will run on Tesla’s ‘Autobidder’ software, using the latest technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Harmony Energy CEO Peter Kavanagh stressed that battery energy storage for large-scale installations is “key” to the UK’s sustainable future.

“This has always been one of the main areas for improvement in the country’s renewable energy strategy, both in terms of controlling the grid frequency and providing backup during peak demand and supply periods. We are delighted to have worked closely with FRV and Tesla to complete this project, which is also our first battery-powered energy storage project in the UK. ‘

For his part, Felipe Hernández, Director of Engineering and Asset Management at FRV, highlighted that Holes Bay will be the first in a strategic portfolio of energy storage projects that the company wants to implement worldwide. “This project demonstrates the technological and economic viability of the battery systems system, while supporting the UK’s sustainable energy program,” he stressed.

FRV’s future plan includes long-term investments in battery-powered energy storage projects, which play a key role in the transition and penetration of renewables in the global energy mix.

“We are collaborating with governments, regulators and strategic partners around the world to lay the foundations for a new energy model. Energy storage plays a critical role for the viability and consolidation of renewable energies, and FRV recognizes the value of this technology as a key element to achieve a decarbonized society ”, Felipe Hernández concluded.
